The Moon is the only natural satellite of the Earth, with a diameter of 3,474.2 km. 384.4 thousand km away from Earth.

The lunar surface is cratered by billions of years of asteroid bombardment. The moon does not have a thick atmosphere that could keep out some asteroids.

There are many theories about the formation of the Moon, the most popular of them is the theory that another planet the size of Mars, Theia, hit the Earth about 4.5 billion years ago. The impact created a huge explosion from which our Moon was formed.
