It was discovered on October 13, 1773 by Charles Messier.

It is approximately 31 million light years away from Earth.

It is best to observe it in spring.

The galaxy can be recognized in medium-sized binoculars, but larger equipment is needed to see the details.
​
This galaxy has a diameter of approximately 76 thousand. light years.
​
Fun fact: This galaxy is in the process of colliding with the smaller galaxy NGC 5195 (Visible to the left of M51). The smaller galaxy visible in the photo will eventually be absorbed by the larger one. Scientists are still debating what shape this set of galaxies will take in the next stages of the collision.
